Floss IS a must

Flossing Tijuana I love my dentist

Probably not the first time you’ve heard this lecture about how flossing is very important. But, do you know how it makes an impact on your oral health?

Flossing has the same importance as brushing your teeth since it helps remove the gunk and plaque that’s hiding in the tiny, hard-to-see spaces inside your mouth that toothbrushes may miss. Think of a carpet before and after you vacuum. You may not really see the dust and dirt, but once you vacuum and the dust and dirt are removed, the carpet looks brighter. The same principle applies to flossing. When you skip this part, plaque can build up between your teeth and along your gums. Over time, this can increase your risk of tooth decay and gum disease and then lead to a bigger and more complicated problem. Plus, it gives you the opportunity to examine your mouth, teeth, and gums, especially for any changes, redness, soreness, or swelling.

Don’t let it pass!

Most people ignore flossing because they have not been informed correctly as to why they should floss. Also, bleeding may be the main reason why people avoid this step in their routine for many years. Bleeding is due to the accumulation of bacteria and after an extended period of time, tartar or calculus buildup with gum inflammation. If you have never flossed before, your gums may bleed in a few areas or more. The bleeding could stop for the most part within a week or two, but one still needs a dental professional evaluation and hygiene visit. Remember it is important to get a six-month checkup and cleaning for dental hygiene.

To sum everything up, flossing will do a perfect job in helping prevent any tooth or gum disease by getting rid of all the plaque left after brushing your teeth twice or three times a day. Also, if food gets trapped between your teeth, it slowly starts to decay and turns into a funny-smelling breath. So bad breath won’t be a problem anymore if flossing at least once a day for 2 minutes!

Maybe something you didn’t know but it can also help your heart health. According to a large 2019 study, participants who adhered to a high standard of oral hygiene had a decreased risk of atrial fibrillation and heart failure.

It’s generally recommended that you floss your teeth before brushing them. When you floss, you typically loosen food particles and plaque around your teeth. The brushing action then helps to remove the plaque and particles that you’ve removed from your teeth and gum line.

All of this information can be better explained by your dentist, don’t forget to ask on your next visit! Schedule your appointment with us at I Love My Dentist and get more information and that six-month cleaning you may be putting off.
