Top questions people are asking about dental implants
As you may know, I love my dentist is a full dental clinic with a complete bilingual and board-certified staff of doctors. Being that said, one of our most recurrent procedures is dental implants.
What is so special about this procedure? Well, our doctors replace a complete tooth, making it look as perfect as it can be.
Even though this is a 4-month treatment, it is also a well-known and safe procedure for patients who look to replace a tooth.
We asked one of our periodontists 9 of the most asked questions on the internet, and here is what he had to say.
1.- What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a titanium post that our periodontist surgically places inside your bone. It is usually the best way to replace any missing tooth.
As a result, this procedure brings back all your functions, esthetics, and health.
In addition, it gives you the ability to clean up like your older tooth or the last tooth you had before.
2.- Are dental implants safe?
Of course. In this day and age, surgical implant placement is a completely safe procedure.
Furthermore, they are the most conservative way to replace any missing tooth, having an approximately 98% survival rate.
Finally, most patients are candidates for dental implants, including young, middle-aged, and elderly patients.
3.- I have a loose tooth, and I don’t know what to do?
One of the most common questions from patients is what to do when having a loose tooth.
Often patients have these unfortunate and stressful situations due to gum disease, but there are two ways to approach this.
The first thing to do is to have a periodontal treatment and see if we can save the tooth. If we can not, the best option is to replace it is with a dental implant.
4.- Is a dental implant painful?
Dental implants are not painful. Regularly, our patients have local or general anesthesia placed, depending on the patient.
Additionally, it is common to prescribe low doses of painkillers, anti-inflammatory pills, or antibiotics.
5.- Can I eat after I’ve had a dental implant placed?
Yes! Most of the patients can eat after having a dental implant procedure.
For example, if a patient has an implant placed on the left, they can chew from the right side.
Moreover, if they have multiple implants placed, they can still eat after, but some patients will have a soft food diet for around 7-days.
After this period, they can continue with their regular life.
6.- Are dental implants permanent?
Nowadays, dental implants can be permanent, but as you may know, nothing in life lasts forever.
To enhance the lifespan of your dental implant, patients need to have correct placement of the implant hence good oral hygiene.
7.- Can dental implants fall out?
The answer to this question is yes and no. There is no possibility that dental implants would fall out.
There are cases, however, in which patients do not maintain good oral hygiene or the implant is not placed properly.
Both cases of implant rejection are possible. So it is highly recommended to maintain good oral hygiene and to follow your dentist’s instructions.
8.- Can dental implants be placed in one day?
Indeed, dental implants can be placed in one day.
9.- How do I know if I’m a candidate for dental implants?
The best way to know if you are a candidate is to book an appointment for a consultation at I love my dentist.
But, patients with a long history of gum disease, heavy decay, or who have had a traumatic event resulting in tooth loss, are candidates for dental implants.
