What to do?
Dental emergencies come in many forms; some are more urgent than others, and your actions may have an impact on the final outcome. Please find below some helpful tips in case of a dental injury or emergency:
Stay calm.
Please remain calm and give us a call. We will set an appointment as soon as possible and give you tips on managing the situation at home in the meantime.Toothache.
Rinse your mouth with warm water and floss to remove food particles. If there is any swelling, apply a cold compress to the area.Broken tooth.
Save all pieces of the broken tooth and rinse your mouth with warm water to remove any fragments left. Apply a cold compress to the area.Knocked-out or damaged tooth.
One of the most common dental emergencies is a knocked-out tooth caused by a dental injury, from simple accidents like falling over or from playing contact/extreme sports. If this is your case:- Gently rinse the tooth with water without scrubbing, and avoid touching the root.
- Place the tooth back in the mouth where it fell out if possible, and bite down gently on gauze or a wet tea bag.
- If you can’t place it back, put the tooth in a container and cover it with a small amount of milk or saliva. It can also be carried between the lower lip and gum, or under the tongue (be careful not to swallow it).
- Call us right away to set an appointment.
Lost filling or dental crown.
Even though it is highly recommended to come in to our office for the proper care, you may take a few actions in the meantime:- If a filling is lost, temporarily seal the exposed cavity with over-the-counter dental cement.
- If a crown is detached, carefully attempt to put it back on, applying the inside of the crown with over-the-counter dental cement, denture adhesive or even toothpaste. If you can’t achieve this, please bring the crown with you to your appointment.
Dental abscess.
This occurs when a pocket of pus inside of the tooth causes an infection. It could cause sensitivity to cold and hot, high fever, tender lymph nodes in your neck, toothache, swollen face, and bumps on the gums near the affected tooth. It is serious and if left untreated, it could lead to life-threatening conditions.- Rinse your mouth with a mild saline solution of ½ teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water several times a day.
- Set an appointment as soon as possible to contain the situation.
